Safety Grooving for Pavements

Many of us have experienced driving in wet conditions or during an intense rainstorm where you feel your car hydroplaning, where water causes your car’s tires to lose contact with the road surface. That feeling, even for a few seconds, can make you feel totally out of control, and if you’re not, then an accident may occur.

If you think that feeling is terrifying in a car, imagine how it would feel in an airplane that takes fear to a whole new level. 

They recognized that in the 1960s, NASA

developed a method that would improve traction on airport surfaces and wet runways. The process known as safety grooving was born and implemented at airports around the country.

After this “Revolution” in 1972, the (IGGA was born) The International Grooving & Grinding Association. J.P. Hogan Sawing and Coring is a proud participating member. The IGGA is the industry’s leading representative in this area and, along with the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA), developed in 1995. They are industry leaders setting standards we can all learn from and look up to.

The entire concept of grinding/grooving is safety. The process involves carving grooves into otherwise smooth surfaces to allow for water runoff, improving traction of roadways and airport runways. It all works the same way that the treads on your tires work on cars. Implementing this method on these surfaces where the utmost safety is required helps to bump up that traction even more.

Typically, the tool used to create these grooves are diamond blades because they work best on cement and concrete surfaces. J.P. Hogan Coring & Sawing Corp. are specialists in this area.
